The actor’s talent and ability to immerse himself into other identities have been recognised by his peers on countless occassions.

Most notably, he was awarded Best Leading Actor at all major awards events in 2006 – the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTA Film Awards – for his portrayal of Truman Capote.

Other iconic roles that have resulted in award nominations include his performances as a conflicted priest in Doubt (alongside Meryl Streep) and a ruthless political operative in The Ides of March with (alongside George Clooney and Ryan Gosling).

Playing Truman Capote in the movie Capote in 2006. He was awarded Best Leading Actor at The Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Playing Father Brendan Flynn in Doubt, 2008. He was nominated as Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTA Film Awards for his depiction of political operative Paul Zara in The Ides of March, 2011.

Transforming into Gust Avrakotos in Charlie Wilson’s War, 2007. He was nominated as Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Starring alongside Ethan Hawke in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, 2007. COFCA awarded him Actor of the Year.

Alongside Laura Linney in The Savages, 2007, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination and Best Actor award at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Playing Lancaster Dodd in The Master, 2012, which won him Best Supporting Actor at the Film Critics Association Awards.

Playing alongside Woody Harrelson in his most recently released film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

As Lester Bangs in Almost Famous in 2000, he received several nominations for Best Supporting Actor.

Playing a bank manager with a gambling problem in Owning Mahoney, 2003. He won Best Actor at the Chlotrudis Awards and Durban International Film Festival.
