The son of US presidential candidate Donald Trump has used Twitter to liken Syrian refugees to poisoned skittles in a bizarre analogy that’s caused an enormous outcry on social media.
This tweet has understandably caused outrage on Twitter, with many accusing the presidential candidate’s son of diminishing the seriousness of the refugee crisis, which is currently the subject of a United Nations summit in New York.
Social media users have reacted in shock, with many tweeting out graphic images of those suffering in Syria, along with the word ‘Skittles’.
Celebrities and politicians have also responded to the graphic, with Hilary Clinton’s campaign spokesman Nick Merill retweeting the image and adding “This is disgusting”.
Singer John Legend wrote “There’s a tiny chance that anyone could be a murderer. Get rid of everyone now!!! #trumplogic”.
But Mars Candy, the parent company of Wrigley who makes Skittles, “trumped” the lot, responding like this: “Skittles are candy; refugees are people. It’s an inappropriate analogy. We respectfully refrain from further comment, as that could be misinterpreted as marketing.”
Donald Trump Jr has been accused of racism throughout his father’s campaign, and only last week faced backlash when he made an offensive gas chamber reference when comparing how the media treats his father in comparison to Hilary Clinton.
This latest effort is not going down a treat.
