Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of murder by South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeals, overturning his previous culpable murder conviction over the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp in 2013.
The decision sets aside the verdict in 2014 by a Pretoria court that found him guilty of culpable homicide.
Judge Eric Leach said he had no doubt Pistorius knew his actions could cause death and it was irrelevant who the victim was, 9News reports
“I have no doubt, the accused must have foreseen and therefore did foresee that whoever was behind that door might die.”
The judge also added that he did not accept the version of events offered by Pistorius, who claimed he fired shots at a locked bathroom door because he believed the intruder was inside.
Pistorius will now face sentencing for murder, which carries a minimum sentence of 15 years in South Africa, SMH reports
