One dead and two injured in Bankstown shooting

Police are hunting the gunman who opened fire on three people in a cafe at Bankstown Central Shopping centre in broad daylight.

CCTV footage has shown a suspected getaway car escaping the scene after a man was shot dead in the carpark of the Bankstown Central Shopping Centre this afternoon.

In the footage, a white Mercedes was driving down a nearby street with a white hatchback tailing it. Both cars were found burnt out in Greenacre.

Police believe the Mercedes drove into the carpark of the shopping centre at 11.50am, where a gunman got out of the car and went to a café before shooting at three people.

Eight gun shots were fired, which left one man dead and a woman and man injured.

The man who died at the scene is believed to be Walid “Wally” Ahmad, 40, a convicted criminal linked to a recent fatal shooting at a smash repairer in Condell Park.

A woman, 31, who is believed to be Ahmad’s girlfriend, plus another man, 60, were both shot in the legs and have been taken to Liverpool hospital.

Police are on the hunt for the gunman, who they do not believe acted alone. No arrests have been made.

“It’s clearly targeted. This isn’t a random shooting. It is clearly targeted towards the man who has died as a result of the gunshot wounds,” Detective Superintendent David Eardley told 9NEWS.

“I can assure the Bankstown and neighbouring communities not to be concerned about this incident – it’s clearly a targeted shooting,” he said.

“As I was parking my car, I heard gun shots. I went upstairs and there were three on the floor, two guys and a girl,” a witness told 9News of the horrific scene.

“There was a guy lying in a pool of blood. They were trying to revive him, but he [had] passed away already.”
