It’s been 25 years since “Nevermind” was released

Not to panic you, but it’s been a whole 25 years since Nirvana’s iconic “Nevermind” album was released.

The album, which is just as famous for its cover image as it is for the songs, featured a naked baby swimming underwater and a one dollar note. Now, the album’s star has honoured the album by posing (modesty protected by swimmers), 25 years on.

Spencer Elden initially wanted to be naked on the shoot, but the photographer said that “he thought that would be weird”, so Elden wore his shorts instead, he told the New York Post.

The album, which included iconic songs such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come as You Are” sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, and went 5-times platinum in Australia. Elden, who is now an artist, said:

“The anniversary means something to me. It’s strange that I did this for five minutes when I was four months old and it became this really iconic image.

“It’s cool but weird to be part of something so important that I don’t even remember.”

The original image, taken in 1991, was shot by photographer Kirk Weddle, in a shoot that only lasted 15 seconds. According to an interview with NPR, Elder’s parents were paid just $200. This time around, photographer John Chapple paid him $200 to do it again.

It’s not the first time Elder has recreated the album cover. In 2006, he did the same thing for the 15th anniversary.
