1.South Australian police have released new images they hope will help identify the child whose remains were found stuffed into a suitcase in the side of a highway last week.
Detectives published a series of new images of items of clothing recovered from the suitcase, including a purple Dora the Explorer t-shirt, a pair of pink tracksuit pants, a fake fur trimmed coat, red shorts and boxer shorts with teddy bears on them.
The skeletal remains of a child aged three to five years was found in the faded suitcase beside Karoonda Highway near Wynarka, 120km east of Adelaide last Wednesday.
It is believed the child had been there for up to two months.
Police released images of a glittery tutu, pink shoe and another t-shirt and pair of shorts on Friday, resulting in a flurry of calls to Crime Stoppers.
They hope the new images will result in a similar influx of tips, and are particularly interested in information about a man seen walking down the highway at about 8am one morning six to eight weeks ago. He is described as being about 60 years old, of Caucasian appearance, average height, lightly built, neatly dressed and not known to locals.
Any drivers with dashcam footage of the highway have been urged to come forward as their video could provide vital information.
Police said several factors made it unlikely the victim was missing NSW boy William Tyrrell.
2.Four bridesmaids were killed when their limousine was hit by a suspected drunk driver on Saturday afternoon.
The women were among eight friends celebrating a bride-to-be’s hen party on Long Island in New York when a ute smashed into their limo.
Three of the women – all bridesmaids at the upcoming wedding – were killed instantly and a fourth died at hospital. Five others – including the bride-to-be, the limo driver and the ute driver – were seriously injured.
The bride-to-be is in a critical condition in hospital.
The victim’s names have not been released but they are believed to have been from the New York area.
3.A 21-year-old man has been found dead in Demi Moore’s swimming pool.
Hollywood website TMZ reports that the young man apparently slipped and fell into the pool overnight.
His body was found this morning.
Sources have told TMZ that neither Demi nor her three children were at home at the time.
Demi’s home is on the Oak Pass Road in Beverly Hills.
Neighbours have lately complained about parties being held ‘day and night’ at the property.
The LAPD told Us Weekly that five people were at the house overnight, including Demi’s caretaker, and a maid.
Demi’s daughter Rumer lives in New York, and younger sisters Tullalah and Scout have been posting photographs from their summer holiday in France.
4.Facebook has made a subtle but important change to one of its key symbols.
The ‘Friends’ icon – which used to show the head and shoulders of a larger male standing slightly in front of the smaller, more rounded shoulders of a woman – has been changed to bring the two genders in line with each other.
Facebook designer Caitlin Winner says she decided to redesign the icon that showed silhouettes of a man and a woman because “the male was larger and placed at the front – clearly overshadowing the female profile.”
Caitlin says she was nervous about making changes to the icon until a colleague “helpfully pointed me to the poster next to mine which proclaimed: “Nothing at Facebook is someone else’s problem.””
“As a woman, educated at a women’s college, it was hard not to read into the symbolism of the current icon,” she wrote.
“The woman was quite literally in the shadow of the man, she was not in a position to lean in.
“As a result of this project, I’m on high alert for symbolism. I try to question all icons, especially those that feel the most familiar.
“For example, is the briefcase the best symbol for ‘work’? Which population carried briefcases and in which era? What are other ways that ‘work’ could be symbolized and what would those icons evoke for the majority of people on Earth?”
Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, who wrote the feminist manifesto Lean In, approves of the change, saying: “Facebook is a global community, and we want to represent the many kinds of people who use our service.
“Symbols matter – and a small image can carry a giant message.”
5.You can’t kill animals for fur coats, but would you wear a fur coat made of road kill?
Fashion designer Pamela Paquin says you can.
In an interview with CNN, Pamela explains how she turns road kill into “expensive high-fashion fur pieces.”
Items under the Petite Mort Fur label, including a red fox wrap stole and racoon leg warmers, sell for up to $2500 a piece.
You can also get road kill earrings for $45 a pair.
Pamela says the fur from road kill is “ethical fur”.
“Nearly one million animals are killed every day on the roads,” she says.
“It was a wasted resource and I decided after some deep thought that I could make a viable business out of this.”
Pamela often receives calls from people who have seen dead animals on the road, and she drives out to pick up the carcass, and skins the animal where she found it.
“I like to put the remains in the woods for other animals to have safely as a meal. It’s in a safe place rather than having the scavengers go on the road and get hit as well.”
She attaches a sterling silver badge to each item, says what the animal was and where and when it was killed, for example: “This item was made from a bear that was killed on Route 91 in Brattleboro, Vermont.”
6.House speaker Bronwyn Bishop is suffering from “delusions of grandeur” and should stand down for the sake of her party.
In a strong editorial this morning, The Australian newspaper said that Ms Bishop should not have charged the taxpayer more than $5000 to travel in a plush helicopter from Melbourne to Geelong.
It’s a journey of about 80 kilometres, easily done in under 90 minutes by road.
The Australian says Ms Bishop’s decision to land on the lawn outside a political fundraiser for the Liberal Party has generated ‘understandable’ public anger.
“She should consider her position,” the paper says.
The ALP has referred the matter to the police.
7.US president Barack Obama did his best over the weekend to behave like a normal Dad, taking his teen daughter to a sightseeing trip to New York, where they took in a Broadway show.
It didn’t go exactly to plan, with fully everyone recognizing the President as he went to take his seat
The New York Post reports that the President received a standing ovation.
Sasha, 14, travelled to New York with her Dad, and two of her teenage friends.
Older sister Malia, 17, is doing a summer internship on the set of the HBO television series Girls, created by Lena Dunham.
In an essay for the last issue of More magazine, President Obama said he was “dreading” having the girls leave home to go to college in the next few years.
It’s common for American children to leave home at 17 to attend four or five years of college. Most live on campus, coming home only for the big holidays, like Thanksgiving.
Most would say it’s the best time of their lives.
“I’m already dreading that empty seat at the table when Malia goes off to school next fall,” President Obama said.
“For as long as possible, I’m going to enjoy every minute of finally having us all together under one roof.”
8.Glacial actress Tilda Swinton is unrecognizable as a tandoori-tan magazine editor in the new movie, Trainwreck.
Tilda, who is perhaps best-known for her role as the pale-skinned ice queen in Narnia, caked on the make-up and slapped on the fake tan to play Dianna in Amy Schumer’s new film.
She’s got the best English accent you’ve ever heard, too.
Tilda told the BBC that she was transformed by “a lot of makeup and a kind of tandoori tan’ and an orange wig.
“The truth is there are a lot of women walking around rocking Dianna’s look,” she said.
“But it’s available for everybody. You just have to go to a big makeup counter in a big department store and you, too, can get that look.”
9.Former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been arrested in New Zealand, less than two weeks after being sentenced for drug possession and making threats to kill.
CNN reports that Rudd was arrested after being sentenced to eight months in house detention.
His lawyer Craig Tuck has said the 61-year-old has been arrested again and will appear in court this morning.
0“All I can say is he has been arrested.
“That’s all I can say for now and that’s all I am telling everyone who is calling.”
10.And in sports news, we thrashed them.

It is the biggest victory by runs in an Ashes match since 1948, and the fourth biggest of all time.
