1.IT has long been understood that women put on weight when they become Mums but Dads do, too.
A new study in the American Journal of Men’s Health says Dads can expect to pack on the pounds with the arrival of every new child, just like Mum does.
The study analysed the BMI of more than 10,000 men from adolescence into their mid-30s, comparing non-fathers to resident fathers (who live with their children) and non-resident fathers.
All the Dads got fatter, with resident Dads putting on the most pork.
‘In fact, a regular 6-foot-tall man living with his child gained an average of 4.4 pounds (2kg) after becoming a dad for the first time, according to the study,’ the study said.
The study only speculates why fatherhood leads to extra weight gain but one of the researchers ‘noted his weakness for finishing his kids’ leftover frozen pizza.’
2.Another day, another expenses scandal.
We’ve known for about a week now that Labor MP Tony Burke claimed more than $10,000 from the taxpayer to take his kids to Uluru.
They all flew business class, as kids so need to do, because it’s business, right?
Right.
Now it seems that Burke also claimed more than $200,000 flying around the world first class, including to Europe, with his young chief-of-staff.
The lady in question is now his spouse. She’s got two kids from her first marriage, so they get to fly around for free, too.
It’s a fantastic lurk if only the average punter could get a piece of it. Because hey, this is your money, and surely you don’t mind working a whole day to send Burke and his tin lids to a luxury resort so he can examine indigenous artifacts or whatever he claims to have been doing.
Wait, what’s that? You’d rather keep that money and take your own kids to Uluru? Well, too bad. He’s ENTITLED to these trips. He said so himself.
More details, if you can bear to read them, here.
3.PARENTS of children who one day hope to get into the property market will be thrilled to learn that the buyer of James Packer’s $70 million mansion on Sydney Harbour is Chinese-Australian businessman Dr Chau Chak Wing.
The good doctor made his money developing real estate in China, where he is mostly based.
He’s made some enormous philanthropic donations over the years, including a $20 million gift to the University of Technology, Sydney, to build the landmark Frank Gehry-designed Dr Chau Chak Wing Building.
His wife lives in Sydney’s Hunters Hill. His youngest daughter, Winky Chow, runs the Chinese language newspaper Australian New Express Daily.
4.NEVER give up.
That is the message from this year’s Forbes list of the world’s highest paid actors, which has a man who was pretty much unemployable a year ago sitting right at the top.
Robert Downey Jr apparently earned ‘a cool $US80 million ($A108.40 million) last year’ for his work on Iron Man in comic book movies.
Martial arts star Jackie Chan came in second, making $US50 million for his martial arts movies.
There are three Australians on the list, with Chris Hemsworth at No.15, after making $US27 million as Thor in the Marvel movies; and as Eric the Huntsman in the upcoming Snow White spin-off, The Huntsman.
Hugh Jackman came in at No. 21 with $US23 million (he’ll be in Pan later this year) and then comes Russell Crowe at No. 24, mainly from Noah.
If you’re wondering where all the ladies are, they’re on a separate list to be published later.
5. Andy Murray expecting first child with wife, Kim Sears.
The Daily Mail are reporting that British tennis champion Andy Murray is set to become a first-time dad.
Murray and his wife, Kim Sears, reportedly have had their twelve-week scan and told family and friends they are excited to become parents.
The Scottish couple tied the knot in a traditional ceremony in Andy’s home town of Dunblane earlier this year.
The pair, both 27, exchanged their vows in a 12th Century cathedral before family and friends before emerging out to crowds of locals offering cheers and applause.
The Sussex-born Ms Sears donned an embroidered white gown with three-quarter-length sleeves and a long veil while the Wimbledon champ wore a blue and green kilt.
Murray declared his engagement to Miss Sears, his girlfriend of nine years, in November last year.
The couple met as teenagers in 2005 through Kim’s father Nigel, who is a tennis coach.
6.And in sports news
Australia went into the Trent Bridge Test needing to make history as the first team in almost 80 years to overturn a 1:2 Ashes deficit.
How’d they go?
They were all out for 60 in the shortest first innings in Ashes history.
And oh, how the Brits loved it, with one wag Tweeting the local coppers, “Can you get some officers down to @TrentBridge The Australian cricket team are taking a hammering.”
The police responded: ‘We’re receiving reports of Aussies in trouble …’
But no, they couldn’t help.
