A newborn baby has been found shoved head-first down the pipe of a public toilet.
The Beijing Times reports a police officer rescued the baby girl after members of the public heard its cries.
Blood around the toilet bowl and the fact that no one has reported the infant trapped or missing suggest the mother gave birth in the public toilet in central Beijing, before abandoning the baby.
The infant was taken to a nearby hospital, where she is thriving. She does not appear to have any injuries or disabilities.
Police are now trying to identify the baby’s parents.
China’s one-child policy – which sees heavy fines issued to couples who have more than one baby – and conservative attitude towards children born out of wedlock means babies are sometimes abandoned.
