Reports from the New York Post this morning have described a scene in lower Manhattan as a “bloodbath” with at least eight people confirmed dead and 12 injured after a pickup truck drove into a busy bike path.
Reports indicate the incident is being investigated as a terrorist attack.
The mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, confirmed that eight people died following the crash which he dubbed an ‘”act of terror” at a press conference.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when a truck drove down a popular bike path police have confirmed.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed on their Twitter account that “the vehicle struck multiple people on the path. There are several fatalities and numerous people injured.”
Following this, the vehicle continued south hitting another vehicle. The driver then jumped from the truck with “imitation firearms”, and was shot in the leg by the NYPD.
The suspect has then taken into custody.
