Police say it was an avoidable tragedy

A baby has been delivered alive from a woman who was killed in a car crash in central Hobart.

The 24 year old woman had been returning from dropping her partner off at work when the horrific crash took place. Her two year old child was also in the car.

The woman was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital where her baby was delivered.

Police say that the crash took place at 1am at the intersection of Davey and Argyle streets.

The Hobart Mercury reports that police first spotted the stolen car about five minutes before the crash.

The alleged driver, a 15 year old, has been located and is currently under police guard in hospital.

“Based on information received, police believe the stolen Toyota Rav contained four occupants at the time of the crash, all youths”, a statement from police said

The other passengers in the stolen car, two boys aged 12 and 15 and a girl aged 15, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police Commander Glenn Frame told reporters that the 32-week-term baby is still alive.

“Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the family and the friends of the deceased,” he said.

“It was an avoidable tragedy.”
