A mother accused of stamping her toddler to death claimed she bruised herself falling off her potty, a British court has heard.
Kathryn Smith, 23 and Matthew Rigby, 22, have been charged with murdering 21-month-old Ayeeshia Jane Smith.
She died at her home from a laceration to her heart after what could have been a “forceful” foot stamp to her chest which triggered a cardiac arrest, a post-mortem found.
However, Smith has told police that her daughter was so “stupid” that she would sometimes fall back on her potty, Mirror reports.
“I watched that girl like a hawk. It was the potty and sometimes she would fall back on it,” the mother said in police interviews read out to the jury.
“She was that stupid. You’re trying to say I’m putting bruises on my kid. Matt will even clarify, she fell back off her potty.
“Sometimes she doesn’t like going on it. It’s a weird potty, there’s a long tall back on it and a little ring she sits on.
“She rocks about on it and she just bruised her back on the back of the potty. That was about three days ago.
“I don’t know (about the bruises on her legs). She’s falling over all the time when she runs.”
The couple have denying murdering Ayeeshia on May 1, 2014.
The trial is still underway.
