Police are awaiting the results of a DNA test before they publicly state the bones are Daniel’s, but the family confirmed it on Facebook last night.

“It is with heavy hearts that the family and friends of Dan O’Keeffe share that Dan’s remains were discovered earlier today,” the family wrote on the Facebook page they set up to help find Daniel.

Daniel was just 24 when he disappeared and had been battling anxiety and depression. He left the family home on foot without his wallet, phone or identification.

The Highton house was thoroughly searched by police after Daniel went missing but if his body was already there, it was not found.

There were several sightings of Daniel after he went missing, the most notable being CCTV footage which showed a man resembling Daniel, and using his middle name James, walking into a Queensland medical centre and asking for a glass of water.

The discovery of the remains is not being treated as suspicious.
