NSW Premier Mike Baird has taken to Facebook to encourage students not to stress too much about the HSC, saying his own results were “average at best” and didn’t define his life.
In a touching post, accompanied by a picture of his young self with a mop top and a girlfriend (now his wife) on his arm, Mike said: “Truth be told, I was much more interested in catching waves (and girls) than studying… and my HSC results were average at best.”
Shortly after his school days, he met his future wife Kerryn on a beach on the south coast and school was “suddenly a distant memory”.
“Here’s the truth of it… Life isn’t defined by your exams. It begins after they are finished,” Baird said.
“It’s always important to give everything you do your very best shot, but make sure you keep some perspective.
“When you walk out of that final exam, you’ve got the world at your feet… And most of us oldies will tell you that your best days are yet to come.”
He finished with a simple message: “Good luck guys”.
To which at least one parent responded: ‘Yes, kids, if you’re reading this – get off Facebook. You’re supposed to be studying for your HSC!”
