While a National Ice Taskforce is working to advise Tony Abbott on how to handle the ice epidemic, Australia has caught the eye of Mexican drug cartels.
A report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has revealed Mexican drug cartels have targeted Australian criminals to import ice.
While ice is notoriously easy to make and reasonably cheap, drugs used to make ice – which are regulated in Australia – are not regulated in Mexico so their drug cartels could be aiming to undercut Australian ice prices.
The report also reveals the ice crisis has grown within the drug community with 50 per cent of drug users now using ice, rising from a mere 22 per cent in 2010.
The Australian Senate Committee announces this week smuggled seizures of ice have risen to 2.9 tonnes this financial year.
1.8 tonnes were reported the previous financial year.
And while Australian ice users are reportedly the target of Mexican drug cartels, China is the main source for the drug in Australia, according to the committee.
