Former Australian radio host Mel Greig has spoken out about the aftermath of the fatal ‘Royal Prank’ in 2012.
Greig, who is currently starring on Celebrity Apprentice, spoke to her ‘team’ on the show, explaining that, after news of the prank broke worldwide, she was forced to write out her will in face of the constant stream of death threats.
“Do you know what I had to do the night before I had to leave for London? I had to write out my will because the threats against my life were that severe,” she told her Apprentice team.
The former radio host spoke about her decision to fly to London to be present for the inquest, and having to pay for her own transportation and bodyguards for the event.
“It was so tough. It was like you are at work one minute doing what you do, it was a normal day doing normal things and within a split second everything had changed,” said Greig, “Then that prank call had aired, and Jacintha had committed suicide. My whole world changed, and so did her family’s. It was such a horrible and hard time to deal with.”
Greig also opened up about her struggles to find work following the fall out of the prank.
“I couldn’t get work – you know I applied for so many jobs and no one would employ me,” said Greid.
“Is it because of that? They just wouldn’t touch you?” asked Sophie Monk, another star on the show.
“Some people had the guts to say it, others wouldn’t even give you a response,” responded Greig.
Greig and her co-host Michael Christain were responsible for the 2012 scandal the ‘Royal Prank’, where they pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles just prior to the birth of Prince George.
The duo rang up the hospital the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine, was staying at and inquired about her health.
The nurse that answered, Jacintha Saldanha, gave them a brief account of Catherine’s wellbeing.
When Jacintha realised the truth of the event, she took her own life and publically named both radio hosts in her suicide letter.
Both Greig and Christian were fired from their positions subsequently and the radio show was discontinued.
