A woman, who was found by police to be lying in a pool of blood at a neighbour’s last night, is in hospital and a man is dead after a domestic violence incident in the suburbs of Port Macquarie last night (Thursday).
The 28-year-old woman, whose name has not yet been released, called for help about 6pm yesterday from her neighbour’s home on Magnolia Place, Port Macquarie.
The woman had suffered numerous stab wounds and was reportedly doused in petrol by a man, believed to be her partner.
While emergency staff attended to the woman and cordoned off Magnolia Place, a police pursuit unfolded along the Pacific Highway.
A 36-year-old man, known to the woman, had allegedly fled the scene after the attack.
Police report that at 9.45pm, police attempted to stop and arrest the man at Bonville, near Coffs Harbour, following a lengthy chase along on the Pacific Highway.
Police say a confrontation between police and the man followed, during which a police firearm was discharged and the man died. A critical incident investigation has now been launched.
“A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident including the discharge of a police firearm,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“That investigation will be subject to independent review.
“All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading up to the man’s death.”
