A Northern Territory couple have learned a family member assaulted their three-year-old son while they were out to dinner.
NT News reports the man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – sexually assaulted his nephew and then bragged about it online.
NT Supreme Court heard the man admitted to filming the assault in November last year and then posting it online.
He pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material and producing illegal content.
Court Chief Justice Trevor Riley said the offence was “extremely serious” because the man was in a position of trust with the boy and his parents.
“Not only did you abuse that trust by assaulting the child, but you also recorded your offending conduct,’’ [NT News reports].
“You shared the footage that you recorded with others online.”
The young boys shocked mother was inconsolable.
“She felt a failure as a mother … she has lost trust in everyone,” said Justice Riley.
“The mother talked of crying every day and every night for months and being inconsolable,’’ he said.
The man was sentenced to 14 years behind bars, with a non-parole period of 10 years.
