Geoffrey Blackadder has sacrificed his own life trying to save his brother’s grandkids from drowning.
The 60-year-old from Grafton was swimming with four of the children at Wooli Beach on the north coast of NSW yesterday afternoon when the kids became caught in a rip and swept out into rough seas, report The Daily Telegraph.
Mr Blackadder attempted to save the children but soon found himself in trouble. His 19-year-old great-niece Jasmine, who had been on the shore, headed into the water and dragged him to safety.
Lifeguards rescued the four children and did CPR on Mr Blackadder but he died at the scene. It is speculated he suffered a heart attack.
“I just dropped, I was so exhausted, I couldn’t breathe. Then I looked back and I knew he was gone. He always so beautiful with all the kids, he’d go to the end of the earth for them. My family has been praising me but I think anyone would have done it,” Jasmine told The Daily Telegraph.
Geoffrey’s family have set up a GoFundMe page to help with his funeral costs.
This is the fifth person who has drowned in open water this Christmas season which includes three on Boxing Day alone.
