A 27-year-old man drowned while snorkelling with friends at Gordons Bay in Sydney’s east yesterday.
The man, known as ‘Lucky’, was pulled from the water unconscious at about 5.40pm.
Passers-by, including two off-duty members of the Clovelly Surf Life Saving club performed CPR for 30 minutes but were unable to revive him. By the time the NSW Ambulance helicopter arrived at the scene shortly before 6pm, he was dead.
It is believed ‘Lucky’ was snorkelling with two friends. When they lost sight of him they assumed he had gone back to shore. But when they went back to the beach and still couldn’t find him, they panicked and started a search which ended with Lucky’s unconscious body being dragged from the water.
Gordons Bay is a picturesque swimming spot located between Coogee and Clovelly beaches. It is popular with snorkelers.
Lucky’s death occurred one year almost to the day that another man died after a cliff fall at the same location.
