‘FINALLY!’ – That is the word was uttered by every movie fan when Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY nabbed his Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Revenant.
In the lead up to the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday night it was no secret who the people’s favourite was – Leo, who has been nominated five other times for 2014’s The Wolf of Wall Street, 2007’s Blood Diamond, 2005’s The Aviator, and his breakthrough role in 1994’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
Despite being pitted as the red hot favourite for his portrayal of legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass fans of the 41-year-old didn’t get their hopes up – after all they have been burned before when poor Leo has always walked away Oscar-less, and no doubt left to seek comfort in the arms of a leggy supermodel.
But not today! Not to-day. Today the Oscar goes home with Leo.
The A-list audience in the Dolby Theatre rose to give the actor a standing ovation but as expected an elated Leo was gracious in his acceptance.
Looking dapper in his Armani suit the actor thanked his co-star Tom Hardy, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and Leo made special mention to his Oscars date, his mother Irmelin Indenbirken.
“To my parents, none of this would be possible without you,” said Leo. And as the camera panned to a shot of an overwhelmed Kate Winslet, DiCaprio’s Titanic co-star who was also nominated for her supporting role in Jobs, the actor said: “To my friends, I love you dearly, you know who you are.”
In closing the passionate environmentalist urged the importance of action on climate change.
“I thank you all for this amazing award tonight,” said Leo. “Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so much.”
