The case has set a new precedent for the treatment of child abuse, with the Guardian reporting that there haven’t been any others like it in the country.
The 53 year-old father, said to be a wealthy man from Turin, has claimed that he was only acting out of parental concern after her saw photos of his daughter in which he believed they looked ‘fat’.
However the mother of the two daughters, who were teenagers when the case began in 2011 and one is now an adult, and her lawyers have argued that the father taunted and mistreated his daughters, resulting in psychological trauma.
The father will appeal his sentence.
According to the national support group, Adult Surviving Child Abuse (ASCA), adult survivors of child abuse that child abuse can lead to psychological and health problems later in life, including depression, low self-esteem and anxiety.
