ISIS has said it’s responsible for the Monday night’s terror attack in a Berlin market that saw a truck plough through a busy Christmas market in Germany’s capital killing at least nine people.
Early reports claimed that at least 50 people had been injured when a semi-trailer crashed into stalls outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church in the city’s west.
The driver of the truck initially tried to flee the scene but was captured and is now in German police custody. Another suspect is reportedly dead.
According to The Washington Times, the Twitter feed of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Force said that the online intelligence suggested Daesh (Islamic State) was claiming credit for the attack.
The night market and surrounding area is a popular tourist attraction – it is unclear if any Australians have been injured in the incident.
“It is not a very happy morning with these terrible events in Berlin,” Treasurer Scott Morrison told Nine Network. “We are thinking of those families in Berlin and hope that no Australians are affected.”
