Mother-son couple desperate to be together despite jail time threats

It is every bit worth it. If they lock me up for love then they lock me up. There is no way anybody could pull us apart.

A mother-son couple from New Mexico, US, have said that they will fight for the right to continue their relationship, despite the looming threat of jail time. Monica Mares, 36, and her son, Caleb Peterson, 19, have revealed in an interview that the two have โ€œfallen in loveโ€ and are striving to educate the world about โ€˜Genetic Sexual Attractionโ€™.

According to their interview with The Daily Mail, Mares gave birth to Caleb when she was 16 and gave him up for adoption as a baby. The two later reconnected on Facebook when Caleb was 19, after which the relationship turned sexual.

โ€œAt first I told him, โ€˜Iโ€™m sorry I donโ€™t know how you are going to react to this. Iโ€™m your mom and youโ€™re my son, but Iโ€™m falling in love with youโ€™,โ€ Mares told The Daily Mail, โ€œAnd he said: โ€˜You know what I am too. I was scared to let you knowโ€™. He was falling in love with his mom and I was falling in love with my son.โ€

โ€œWe talked about it and we took off to the park. I said, โ€˜Would you ever date your mom?โ€™ And he said: โ€˜Would you ever date your son?โ€™ And I said, โ€˜Honest truth, yes I wouldโ€™.โ€

The coupleโ€™s sexual relationship continued for another few months before police were involved and Mares and Peterson were charged with fourth degree felony of incest. Since their court hearing, the two have been released on bail and ordered not to talk or see each other.

But despite the court order, Mares and Peterson insist theyโ€™ll continue their relationship, even at the cost of their freedom and family. Mares, who is mother to nine children (including Peterson), admitted to The Daily Mail that she would sacrifice her custody of them to be with Caleb.

โ€œIf I had to choose between my son and all my other kids, Iโ€™d chose him,โ€ she said in the interview.

Both Mares and Peterson have admitted they intend to continue their relationship after their sentences, if they are convicted.

โ€œHe is the love of my life and I donโ€™t want to lose him. My kids love him, my whole family does. Nothing can come between us not courts, or jail, nothing,โ€ said Mares.

โ€œI have to be with him. When I get out of prison I will move out of Clovis to a state that allows us to be together.โ€

โ€œIn two years time I can see us living together happily living our lives,โ€ Peterson said. โ€œTrue love can do anything. This whole case is about whether I have the right to love somebody and I sure as hell have the right to love Monica.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t tell me who to love, who not to love.โ€

Mares and Petersonโ€™s case will return to the courts later this year.
