Ross – who spent 40 years working at Channel Nine and Channel Seven – was diagnosed with cancer shortly before Christmas.
He had gone to the doctor to seek treatment for a sore foot when a blood test revealed he was battling the disease, which had already spread to his liver.
He was told he only had five months to live, but vowed to fight to stay alive.
“While I agree with the diagnosis, I do not necessarily agree with the prognosis,” he told Fairfax Media at the time.
“I have decided that the only way to handle this friggin’ nightmare is to remain as positive about it as I possibly can and to get back to leading as ‘normal’ a life as possible.”
Ross – known as Roscoe – retired in 2009, ending a long and successful career that began at Sydney’s 2GB radio station in 1957.
He is survived by his partner of 22 years Grey Bolte, his ex-wife, three children and eight grandchildren.
