A high-profile athlete has died after crashing his car into a Gold Coast fence.
The sportsman, who is yet to be identified, drove his vehicle through a fence in Mermaid Waters around 7am this morning and died on the operating table later this morning.
The 47-year-old is thought to have suffered from a medical episode just moments before the accident, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.
The retired athlete was rushed to hospital but when into cardiac arrest in the emergency room and died.
Media agencies are declining to identify the man until his children have been informed.
His wife visited the scene following the crash and went to the hospital after he passed away.
The man is a former national champion and was still heavily involved with the sport.
The man was worked on by paramedics at the scene for at least an hour before being rushed to the Gold Coast University hospital in a critical condition.
