He may not be battling petty criminals and living in the storm sewers of New York City, but Harley Renshaw has fought cancer in his kidney, lungs, bones and neck, dressed in a Ninja Turtle mask and all.
The five-year-old from Stretford in England shocked hospital staff last year when he asked whether he could make some adjustments to the protective mask that holds him in place while having radiotherapy treatment.
Decorating the mask to look like one of his favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle characters, little Harley Renshaw felt braver, stronger.
So with his new-found strength and decorated mask the five-year-old completed his radiotherapy course and after three months of treatment doctors have told his family the five-year-old is now cancer free, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Harley Renshaw had just started school when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma, and now he will be required to have regular check-ups over the next few years to make sure he remains cancer free.
But he’s not the only superhero to battle cancer in costume at such a young age.
In February, 3-year-old Sophia Sandoval, celebrated getting through eight months of chemotherapy with a Wonder Woman costume and a sign of strength, holding the statement, “My last day of Chemo -it was tough, but I was tougher.”
The toddler from Texas even caught the eye of actress, Lynda Carter who starred as Wonder Woman.
“A real life little WW!! Let’s show her some love,” Carter tweeted.
“When she was taking the medicine, we would tell her she was going to get Super Woman or Wonder Woman powers,” Sophia’s mother, Rossio Sandoval told ABC News when explaining the photo which has gained over one million likes.
“Hopefully it’s helping other people see that not every story has a sad ending.”
