“Guerilla” tourism push for the Northern Territory angers officials

Can you see why this “guerilla” advertising campaign for the Top End is ruffling feathers?

Some are hailing this as clever and exciting marketing, others are say it’s crude and embarrassing. Official Northern Territory and Australian tourism bodies are not amused at all, with whispers of legal action to be launched.

The Daily Mail reports that NT Official, the organisation which has come up with the catchy campaign – and is selling the slogan “CU in the NT” emblazoned on all sorts of merchandise – is coming under fire from government officials who are planning to take legal action.

NT Official (which is not affiliated with any official NT tourism departments) released a statement about it’s campaign saying it’s aim is to ‘bring attention to the unique Northern Territory as an ideal destination for the young or young at hearts.

Here’s some of their creative which ranges from T-shirts to car stickers.

Earlier today, the official NT tourism officials issued the following statement to Mumbrella:

*Tourism NT has no connection and is no way affiliated with the website or Facebook page of NTOfficial.com or any of their promotions.*

Well, it’s certainly got people talking about the Northern Territory.

So what’s your call? Clever marketing, or lewd, crude and disgusting?
