In what sounds like a storyline straight out of Netflix drama Orange is the New Black, a Perth prison guard has been suspended from duties after a female inmate became pregnant.
An investigation into an “alleged consensual sexual relationship” between them has been confirmed by the Department of Corrective Services.
It all unfolded at Bandyup Women’s Prison in Perth, where the female prisoner is said to be receiving “care and support”.
“The department took immediate action as soon as it became aware of the allegation, launching an investigation,” a spokesman from the authority said.
“While the investigation is ongoing an officer has been suspended from duty (precautionary measure), this does not necessitate that the officer is guilty of any wrongdoing.
“The department expects the investigation will take at least five months.”
While in Western Australia it is not illegal for guards to have sex with inmates, it is against prison regulations.
