Gretel Packer to “rise to the challenge” in the CEO Sleep Out

The Packer heiress is set to swap the Crown Resorts for the streets to raise money for the homeless.

For the very first time, Chair of Crown Resorts and Packer powerhouse, Gretel Packer, will be participating in Vinnie’s annual CEO Sleep Out to raise money and awareness for Australia’s homeless population.

Ms Packer, the daughter of Australian media tycoon Kerry Packer, will spend a night out under the stars (well, sort of, she’ll be in a warehouse) in her sleeping bag and PJs to “experience what it’s like to be homeless”.

The Sleep Out, which will no doubt be a shock departure from Packer’s usual luxury digs, aims to raise up to $10 million this year by giving Australian CEOs a taste of the rough life that approximately 100,000 Australians experience every day.

Last year’s CEO Sleep Out.

Last year, the funds raised from the event were put towards 1,197,633 meals for the homeless and helped provide assistance on 1,161,239 occasions.

The CEOs will sleep under a cardboard box, in sleeping bag, and will, for the night at least, be without the extravagances of personal assistants, smartphones and Wi-Fi.

Not surprisingly, Ms Packer is currently holding the top fundraiser spot with $67,757 in donations, beating out names like Alison Watkins from Coca-Cola, Bob Bollen from Benz, Nicholas Grey from The Australian, Maxine Horne from Vita, Martine Jager from RAMS, Richard Baker from Southern Cross Austereo and 1080 others.

To donate (to Gretel Packer, or another CEO – your choice), or to participate yourself (warning: no Wi-Fi), go to CEO Sleep Out.
