A GoPro seized by police in an operation targeting graffiti artists has led authorities to today charging four men and one teenage boy for a gang rape occurring in May.
The men – all in their 20s – and a 17-year-old boy allegedly filmed themselves sexual assaulting a 16-year-old girl on the GoPro at a party in Sydney’s West, reports Nine News.
The footage shows up to eight men in the room with the teenage girl who police describe as “unconscious or semi-conscious”. She did not report the assaults at the time, said Detective Chief Inspector Peter Yeomans from the Child Abuse Squad on 2GB Radio this morning.
“These are predominantly adult males in their mid-20s and they’re filming a matter like this on a very young … (and) very slight-framed girl,” said Inspector Yeomans.
“These adult males are quite large men – and some of these men are married with children.
“It was quite obvious to investigators when viewing this footage that the child was either unconscious or semi-conscious during these assaults.
“There were a number of reasons why she didn’t report the matter – her lack of memory at the time, also her fear of any reprisal.”
The teenage boy and three of the men in their 20s have been charged with sexual assault among other offences while the oldest of the accused – a 25-year-old man – has been charged with concealing serious indictable offence, report Nine News.
The men and teenage boy charged are due to appear at Penrith and Mt Druitt courts today and have been refused bail.
