Gold Coast Schoolie injured after balcony fall

In news no parent wants to hear – a teenage boy is recovering in hospital after falling several floors off a balcony.

In news no parent wants to hear – a teenage boy is recovering in hospital after falling several floors off a balcony in Surfers Paradise in the early hours of this morning.

It’s believed the incident occurred around 3am on Thursday morning when the 17-year-old school leaver was leaning over a third storey railing at a Cypress Avenue apartment when he tumbled down two floors.

“We believe he’s lost an item of property, and it’s landed on a ledge and he’s leant over to collect it and he’s fallen the two floors,” Angelique Maloney of Queensland Police told reporters.

The teen was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital and is reported to have sustained a fractured pelvis.

Police have used the incident to warn schoolies about dangerous behaviour – including the ‘balcony hopping’ craze that has been seen on social media.

“It they happen to fall, they may never be hopping again,” Chief Superintendent Terry Boland told reporters.

“We have concerns about it, and we just really hope people can make smart decisions.”
