Has anyone ever made a rude comment about your hair or your skin or your looks, and you’ve just felt like giving them the middle finger?
Well, now you can. And you can do it for charity.
The Butterfly Foundation has just released their brand new campaign, and The Weekly team is firmly on board.
To stand against appearance-based judgement and the promotion of negative body image, the Foundation has launched the ‘Don’t DIS My Appearance’ campaign that will kick off on the 6th of May (coincidentally, International No Diet Day, double win). The campaign invites supporters to buy specially crafted FABY nail polishes, and paint their middle fingers to represent their stand against body shaming.
All the funds raised from the sales of the nail polishes, and from donations, will go to treatment and prevention services and organisations that support and treat people suffering from eating disorders, one of the most prevalent diseases afflicting Australians.
In 2014 it was reported that over 1 million Australians were suffering from eating disorders, the condition which has the highest fatality rate of any other mental illness.
The Butterfly Foundation CEO, Christine Morgan, believes appearance-based judgement can lead to eating disorders, “We know that negative body image can be a contributing factor to developing an eating disorder, and is often perpetuated by the experience of being judged and shamed by others.”
“Painting your middle finger is a cheeky and symbolic way of saying, I am more than my appearance, and no-one has a right to judge me based on how I look,” she said, “By supporting the Don’t DIS My Appearance campaign, you are taking a stand against appearance based judgement and helping to affect positive change for those living with an eating disorder.”
So, get out your nail polish, throw up your middle fingers, and tell the haters how you really feel.
FABY will donate 100% of profits from online sales of selected nail lacquers sold during the month of May 2015. FABY Nail Lacquer is available for purchase online at www.faby.com.au or via www.dontdismyappearance.org.au during the month of May.
