Girls have outperformed boys in pretty much every subject in final year high school exams across the nation, with the possible exception of mathematics.
An analysis of early results from Victoria and New South Wales show girls leading the way in history, English and other languages, while also doing well in the traditionally male-dominated science subjects.
The Sydney Morning Herald says girls took out 82 of the 116 First in Course prizes in New South Wales.
Girls took all three prizes in History (ancient, modern, and history extension) and all five prizes for English.
“Yet again, the girls have well and truly outperformed the boys, it is about a 70/30 split in terms of girls who have topped courses as opposed to boys,” NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said.
The president of the NSW Board of Studies, Tom Alegounarias, said boys were still strong performers in maths and science “but the gap is closing.”
By contrast, four boys took Firsts in mathematics.
