Girl, 4, fighting for life in hospital after GHB overdose

A pre-schooler is reportedly in a critical state after accidentally ingesting the drug GHB.

A pre-schooler is reportedly fighting for life after accidentally ingesting the drug GHB.

It’s alleged that the four-year-old girl was rushed to Albury hospital on Friday night after choking from drinking from a bottle that contained a small amount of the illicit drug, reports The Border Mail reports.

The girl is believed to still be fighting for life in a critical condition.

Meanwhile a 30-year-old man has reportedly been charged with drug possession and was granted bail to appear before Albury court on November 22.

A police spokesperson told local media that police have seized two plastic bottles containing GHB and the Department of Family and Community Services had been made aware of the situation.

WHAT IS GHB?

GHB (gammahydroxybutyrate) is a highly addictive chemical anaesthetic, sold as a colourless, odourless liquid.

It is a potent depressant and because of this experts warn it can be very easy to overdose.

“It’s very easy to overdose on this drug,” Geoff Munro, national policy manager at the Australian Drug Foundation has previously warned.

“It slows the breathing. An overdose can result in dying because you’ve stopped breathing.

“There’s very little room between a therapeutic dose and an overdose. It’s a very strong substance that can quickly shut down the body.”

Earlier this year a warning was issued about the illicit party drug GHB after a “bad batch” saw at least eight hospitalised in Sydney in April, with one person dying.
