As Novak Djokovic takes his third Wimbledon title home, defeating Roger Federer in four sets on Sunday night, we take a closer look at the world number one.
Here are five things you didn’t know about the Serbian.
1. Becoming a father has made him a better player.
“Ever since I got married and became a father, I haven’t lost many matches, I won many tournaments,” said the 28-year-old after winning the grand slam on Sunday evening.
“I suggest that to every player, ‘Get married, have kids, let’s enjoy this’.
Djokovic’s son, Stefan, was born in October.
2. His wife is equally impressive.
As Djokovic enjoys on court wins, his wife is providing some healthy competition off the court with an impressive resume to say the least.
Jelena now balances motherhood, a CEO position, charity work, and reportedly PhD study while her husband makes a living on the tennis court.
First completing a Business Administration undergraduate degree at a university in Milan, Jelana then completed her masters in Luxury Management and Services.
She is also running the Novak Djokovic Foundation which works with disadvantaged children. And yes, she has also dabbled in modelling.
3. The Wimbledon trophy isn’t the only thing Djokovic is celebrating.
The Serbian also married his childhood sweetheart, Jelana Ristic, one year ago and is celebrating his first wedding anniversary today – July 12.
“One year ago I won the trophy, and on this day, we got married in the church, started a new life together,” said Djokovic after defeating Federer.
“It’s really an amazing chapter of my life that I’m trying to enjoy as much as I can. Becoming parents in October was another great dimension of love and energy for us.
“When you’re going for annual holidays with the Wimbledon trophy, it’s slightly different than when you’re not!”
4. The Serbian has a long-standing tradition of eating grass after winning a Wimbledon title. And he also has a sense of humour, along with a strict diet.
“I was assured that’s it’s gluten free, it’s not processed, completely organic and natural and I could eat it,” the 33-year-old said post-win.
“It was obviously nice to repeat this tradition and doing the thing I do after I win the title here in Wimbledon. As I said on the court, when I was a child, dreaming of winning Wimbledon, it was something I always wanted to do in my celebration. I picked that.
“I hope people are not annoyed by that.”
5. The current World number one is close to setting more records.
While his win knocked Federer off course to claiming the most grand slams in history, Djokovic is now in joint third place with his coach, Boris Becker and John McEnroe in holding the most Wimbledon titles, after taking home three trophies.
He has now won nine majors.
