Police officer killed on first day of the job

The 28-year-old had only been sworn in the previous day.

A female police officer has been tragically killed on Saturday, her first day of work.

The Virginia officer, Ashley Guindon, 28, responded to a domestic disturbance between a husband and wife at a home outside Washington.

It was her first shift with the police.

“When they got to the door, the suspect started shooting,” Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said.

Two other officers, Jesse Hempen and David McKeown, were wounded in the crossfire and taken to hospital.

The wife of the suspect was found dead inside the home, and an 11-year-old boy was also in the home at the time, but was unharmed.

A man was arrested at the scene from the incident, 32-year-old Ronald Hamilton, who was an off-duty Army staff sergeant stationed at the Pentagon.

The day before, the department had posted a photo of Guindon and a fellow officer, Steven Kendall, being sworn in to the force, with the caption: ‘Be Safe’.

“It’s a sad day for everyone in this room. It’s a sad day for law enforcement,” Ebert said during a press conference on Sunday, standing next to a photo of Guindon.

Chief Steve Hudson said: “We were struck by her passion to do this job. She clearly had a passion to serve others.”

The Prince William County jail said Hamilton will be arraigned today.
