On Monday, February 6, a member of the Australian Federal Police reportedly suffered a gunshot wound while inside the law enforcement agency’s Melbourne city headquarters.
The officer – who has not yet been named publicly – was rushed from the La Trobe Street location to a nearby hospital after emergency services responded to reports of a firearm incident at approximately 5:45pm.
The AFP have now confirmed that the officer died a short time later.
AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin said, “Our colleague’s death is not believed to be suspicious.”
“My thoughts are with her loved ones and the broader AFP family who are dealing with the loss of one of our own today.”
“We are offering support to her family and the wider AFP workforce.”
The exact cause of the incident remains unclear however, the AFP said this morning that the death was “not accidental.”
At the time of the incident, a waiter at a neighbouring Korean restaurant told the Herald Sun that he saw “many” paramedics carry a person out on a stretcher.
The publication also reported that two police officers were seen filming and photographing the AFP entrance before detectives entered the building at around 7pm.
The AFP confirmed via Twitter that police and ambulance responded to a shooting incident at the Latrobe St offices.
“The AFP can confirm that police and ambulance responded to a shooting incident at its La Trobe Street Headquarters in Melbourne late this afternoon,” an AFP statement said.
“An AFP member has been taken to hospital as a result.”
“The cause of the incident remains under investigation and while this is being undertaken, including notification to family members, the AFP will not be making further comment at this time.”
A statement released by Victoria Police read: “Police are not looking for anyone else connected to the shooting. Police are investigating the incident.”
