Father admits to killing his baby after not seeking help when she fell from change table

Baby Lily died from head injuries.

A Perth court has heard a baby died after she was left unattended and fell off her change table. Baby Lily died from head injuries after her father reportedly refused to get her urgent medical help.

Paul James Cosgrove, 24, admitted to unlawfully killing his baby.

Seven-month-old Lily fell while Cosgrove left her unattended while he disposed of her nappy in their home in Perth.

Lily was reportedly not taken to hospital immediately after the incident.

Prosecutor Amanda Burrows told the West Australian Supreme Court that earlier in the day Cosgrove fell asleep with Lily on the couch before she fell off of him and began vomiting, unsettled.

He allegedly then left Lily with a neighbour, claiming to have a job interview but he went for a massage and to buy some alcohol instead.

When he picked Lily back up, he left her briefly unattended on the change table when she fell.

Cosgrove reportedly fell asleep again with the baby, and tried to shake her awake unsuccessfully when he woke up.

The prosecutor said although urgent medical assistance might not have saved Lily, it could’ve given her a chance at survival and shows severe negligence on her father’s part.
