An EasyJet plane was forced to make an emergency landing after an unruly passenger tried to pull open the door mid-flight.
The Airbus A320 was flying from Marrakech to Gatwick on Monday when it was diverted to Bordeaux, France two hours into the four-hour flight after a drunken male traveller reportedly caused the panic at 30,000 feet.
Witnesses said the passenger, believed to be British and in his 30s, guzzled duty-free spirits as soon as he got on the flight and was seen shoving his girlfriend when she tried to get him to sit down.
In a statement, EasyJet confirmed police boarded the 180-seat flight after landing in Bordeaux.
“EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY8896 from Marrakech to London Gatwick on 7 March diverted to Bordeaux as a result of a passenger onboard behaving in a disruptive manner,” the statement read.
“The aircraft was met by the police on arrival at Bordeaux and the passenger disembarked.”
Passenger Joe Mortell, 26, from Cheltenham, told the Sun: “He was drinking rum or whisky. Air crew took the bottle off him but it was too late.”
It looks like if the airline gets its way, the difficult passenger will face charges. The EasyJet statement also read:
“Whilst such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously, do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard and always push for prosecution.”
