It’s the most improbable romance – a high-flying London banker and a convicted drug mule serving a life sentence in a Bali prison.
But Bali Nine drug smuggler Scott Rush, 28, and his wealthy British fiancée Nikki Butler, 38, have spoken out about their love for one another.
“I don’t want to be with anyone else,” Butler told journalist Tara Brown on 60 Minutes last night. “He’s just perfect to me.”
Rush was only a teenager when he was arrested in 2005 as a member of the infamous Bali Nine, a group of Australians who attempted to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin out of Indonesia.
Now, almost 10 years later, he is planning to wed his “angel”.
The couple met years ago in Bali, before Rush was arrested. They spent an afternoon together but didn’t keep in contact.
She returned to London, while Rush was stopped at Denpasar airport with drugs strapped to his body.
It wasn’t until Butler recognised him on television years later that they began a relationship. Since February she has visited him behind bars several times and in May Rush asked her to marry him.
Although they have plenty of sceptics, the couple say their love is the real deal.
“I’m in love with her … she’s perfect, she’s pretty and smart and she looks after me,” Rush said on the current affairs program. “After all the trouble she’s been given, she still comes back.”
