In September, 34-year-old Renee Codd was driving her one-year-old son home from daycare when she veered off the road, crashing into a ditch on the side of the road.
Her little boy was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle.
Reportedly, when stopped by police, Ms Codd told them she’d had two glasses of wine earlier that day. However, when breathalysed, 34-year-old Ms Codd blew 2.94 – which is six times the legal blood-alcohol limit.
Not only that, but before this incident, the court heard she’d been caught drink-driving twice before.
As reported by Yahoo 7, Ms Codd had spent the day heavily day-drinking at home, concerned over an argument she’d had with her ex-partner.
Following the Sunbury, Victoria accident, Ms Codd was sentenced to 45 days in jail – a jail term that this week has been overturned.
According to 7 News, the county court heard that her parents had put up $10,000 to provide their daughter with rehab for alcoholism.
Crying tears of relief as she left the court, all Ms Codd could mutter was… “Sorry.”
“She feels sick every day and vomits nearly every day because of what could have happened,” her barrister, Sharon Kermath, revealed.
Ms Kermath told the county court that Ms Codd, despite suffering from alcoholism and chronic anxiety disorder, was an intelligent woman, having completed a Master’s degree in speech pathology.
A convicted Ms Codd was handed a one-year community corrections order. Her driver’s licence has been disqualified for four years.
