A man who killed his pregnant wife and son in a double-murder suicide car crash also rigged a bomb intended to wipe out his whole family.
Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate reports that a coronial inquest into the deaths of Darren Milne, his pregnant wife Susana Estevez Castillo and their son Liam, 11, revealed Mr Milne had meticulously orchestrated the February 1 2015 crash.
The inquest at Wyong Local Court heard that the 42-year-old father-of-two was an electrical worker who had plotted the murder-suicide for months.
It was alleged that Mr Milne had carefully picked the “heavily wooded” stretch of road between Sydney and the Central Coast and filmed “10 practice runs” on his dash cam just two days before he purposely slammed his Toyota Corolla into a tree on Enterprise Drive, Berkeley Vale, killing his wife and son, and critically injuring his youngest child, Benjamin, who was 7-years-old at the time.
In his evidence leading Senior Constable Peter Mason, of the Forensic Services Group said investigations revealed there was a system of explosives rigged up within the vehicle – including one behind the headlight set to go off on impact – that did not detonate.
Police suggested that Mr Milne planned to kill his family after worrying his two sons, both diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, would not be accepted in society growing up.
Following the crash Benjamin was rushed to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and placed in an induced coma, with critical head, back and internal injuries.
It is believed the orphaned boy has made strides in his recovery and has been taken in by his aunt’s family on his mother’s side.
