Donald Trump has been named TIME Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ for 2016 and it’s a selection that has been met with outrage.
The President-elect has been a controversial figure since throwing his hat in the race to win the White House and this is precisely why he’s been picked by the publication.
“This is the 90th time we have named the person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year. So which is it this year: Better or worse? The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer,” TIME wrote in its announcement on Wednesday.
“For those who believe this is all for the better, Trump’s victory represents a long-overdue rebuke to an entrenched and arrogant governing class,” it said. “…to his detractors, he inspires fear both for what he may do and what may be done in his name.”
The cover features the future leader with a coverline that reads: ‘President of the Divided States of America’.
TIME’s choices for Person of the Year are often provocative.
According to TIME’s website Since the 20s editors have been “asked to choose the person or thing that had the greatest impact on the news, for good or ill — guidelines that leave them no choice but to select a newsworthy — not necessarily praiseworthy — cover subject.”
