A brave German Shepard named Lucca has received the highest military honour for animals serving in military conflict after losing a limb in an explosion and being forced into retirement, reports 9News.

The bomb-sniffing canine served in the US Marine Corps for six years and took part in over 400 missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not a single soldier was injured on Lucca’s watch, which was cut short in 2012 when a homemade bomb injured her.

Lucca lost a leg and received burns to her chest.

Yesterday, Lucca became the 67th animal to receive the PDSA Dickin Medal for her service to her country.

“Lucca is very intelligent, loyal and had an amazing drive for work as a search dog,” said owner, Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Willingham.

“She is the only reason I made it home to my family and I am fortunate to have served with her. Today, I do my best to keep her spoiled in her well-deserved retirement.”

We hope Lucca enjoys retirement, she has earned a rest.
