For more than six years, the actress and the mother of two has continued to lead the charge on adoption awareness in Australia with National Adoption Awareness Week (NAAW).
Today, NAAW, which helps families navigate the complex adoption processes in Australia, has re-emerged as Adopt Change to allow for always-on, year-round campaigning.
“We will now advocate throughout the year and we will continue to keep all the issues surrounding abandoned and vulnerable children and adoption in the forefront of the public’s awareness,” said Deborra-lee at the Adopt Change launch at the Hilton Hotel.
The Weekly’s editor in chief, Helen McCabe, who is a board member of Adopt Change, said the aim is to give more children loving homes.
“It is about getting real results from both our inter-country and domestic adoption programs,” she said today.
“The fact is there has been a 77 per cent decline in the number of adoption rates in the last 25 years.
“And Australian families now wait an average of five years to adopt.”
Also announced today were the Adopt Change youth ambassadors and media ambassadors including, Sandra Sully, Karl Stefanovic and Melissa Doyle.
Deborra-lee has two adopted children – Oscar and Ava with husband Hugh Jackman.
