Dylann Roof, 22, has been sentenced to death following the killings of nine African American churchgoers in South Carolina in 2015.
The self-proclaimed white supremacist Nazi and Ku Klux Klan sympathiser opened fire during a Bible study group at Mother Emanuel, killing nine people ranging in age from 26 to 87.
In December a jury found Roof guilty on all counts in the massacre. Roof was convicted of 33 counts, including murder, attempted murder, federal hate crimes and obstruction of religion.
In a videotaped confession shown during his trial, Roof calmly said he carried out the attack in retaliation for alleged crimes committed by black people against white victims.
He laughed during the confession, saying he hadn’t gone to another church “because there could be white people there”.
Roof represented himself during the sentencing phase, telling jurors:
“I still feel like I had to do it.”
Prosecutor Jay Richardson urged jurors to sentence Roof to death for “this cold, calculated, malicious killing.”
“Not one tear did he shed for those that he killed,” he said. “Unrepentant. No remorse.”
He showed little reaction to the sentencing verdict, though he occasionally seemed to be slightly smiling.
