Day for Daniel: Morcombes turn out with grandson Winston to remember Daniel

This will be his first Day for Daniel.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe have been joined by a sea of people in red as they go on their annual Day for Daniel walk in Woombye on the Sunshine Coast to commemorate their son Daniel Morcombe.

October 28 marks the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s 12th annual Day for Daniel and his parents Bruce and Denise have used the occasion to call for an online child sex offender register they say will reduce crimes against society’s most vulnerable.

On their website the Morcombes propose ‘Daniel’s law’ – a public accessible sex offender website which they call a “sensible, responsible and modern approach to educating children and parents.”

Senator Derryn Hinch joined the Morcombes on stage and he declared he would get the register through federal parliament and name it Daniel’s Law to honour their son who was murdered in December 2003 after being abducted from a bus stop on the Sunshine Coast.

In 2015 convicted sex offender Brett Peter Cowan was found guilty of the murder and is severing a life sentence.

A record 1200 Queensland schools and another 1700 across the country have joined the 12th Annual Day for Daniel and many students from Daniel’s former school, Siena Catholic College turned out to support the day.

Also out in support was Bruce and Denise’s baby grandson Winston. Daniel’s twin brother Brad and his wife Anna welcomed their first child earlier this year and gave him the middle name Daniel as a nod to the uncle he will never meet.

“He’s simply the most gorgeous little boy, isn’t he?” Denise told The Weekly when we met the family for an exclusive photoshoot for our October issue. “He’s such a perfet little man. Holding him like this reminds me so much of when our twins boys, Daniel and Brad, were born.”

Denise added: “There’s always so much hope and promise around the birth of a baby. Winston makes me smile.”

Today while doing a live cross from the Today show Bruce and Denise were congratulated on becoming grandparents.

“Little Winston will be here shortly,” Denise told Today. “I’ve been sent a photo with his little red t-shirt.”

“This will be his first Day for Daniel,” Bruce said.
