Jake Rovacsek, 21, and Toben Clements, 23, from Curtin University in WA were shot in the early hours of Wednesday morning after they were lured into a car by three suspects.
When they refused to hand over “hundreds of dollars”, their attackers uttered six words the men were certain would be the last they would ever hear: “You know what time it is?”
Both men were then shot – Rovacek in the stomach and Clements in the chest – but miraculously survived their ordeal and are recovering at the New Orleans University Medical Center.
It was initially reported the pair were injured in a drug deal gone bad, but relatives have since denied this version of events, insisting the pair thought they were accepting a ride to another party.
Police are still hunting for their attackers, five days after the crime was committed.
