In a ‘One Size Fits All’ approach, a UK retail outlet has advised their employees to let transgender customers use the change room of their choice, whether that be male or female.
Primark has provided a handbook to employees with guidelines, which were sent to Pink News – Europe’s largest gay news service – by a reader.
The handbook, titled One Size Fits All, reads: “Customers should be comfortable when they try anything on, so transgender people may use whichever fitting room they choose.
“When in doubt it’s pretty easy to know what to do – just give the same level of great service to everyone!”
Confirming the handbook is legitimate, Primark told Pink News, “It is Primark policy to allow all transgender customers to use the fitting rooms of their choice in Primark stores. As you can imagine all our staff are trained on this.”
Transgender issues have made headlines all over the globe in the past week, as Caitlyn Jenner – formerly known as Bruce Jenner – appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, which was labelled “inspiring” by most.
However, the handbook has been released after a trans woman was denied access to the women’s change rooms and told to use the men’s at a Primark store in Ipswich.
A spokesperson for Primark told the East Anglian Daily Times the company’s policy allowed all transgender customers to use the changeroom of their choice and “Primark takes all customer complaints seriously.”
And it seems they have in this case.
