At an event designed to herald the fantastic “successes of women past and present” the Gold Coast International Women’s Celebration and Award Lunch made a terrible faux pas that outraged guests.
As the excited guests filed in, and found their seats amongst the tables, they were looking forward to honouring the women in the room.
The nominees were women who are creators, women who inspire and empower others and women whose can-do attitudes make them shine.
The tables had a gift of a magazine for all of the attendees.
Was it a magazine that praised innovative women? Thought leaders? Movers and shakers?
It was not.
It was a slimming magazine full of tips to lose weight fast, and be more beautiful with cosmetic injections.
The attendees were shocked, and immediately took to social media with comments like –
“OMFG. We are speechless. This is the magazine each woman received at today’s International Women’s Day lunch on the #goldcoast. We have a long way to go. And people ask why we need feminism.”
Another attendee commented on Facebook-
“What the hell is this doing waiting for us at our table at the ceremony for international women’s day??!!!”
Whether someone paid to have their product placed there, or it was the only available merchandise available to give away, there is no doubt that it was a poor choice on behalf of the organisers who are gathering to support women on the one day of the year that celebrates diversity, strength and talent.
